Suit you sir! Unique Land Rover Defender helps launch new menswear department at Selfridges

Selfridges has teamed up with Land Rover to show off the flagship London store’s new menswear space.

Taking pride of place in the ‘Designer Street Room’ is a Defender 110 Works V8 – the latest and greatest incarnation of the iconic Land Rover Defender.

The bespoke vehicle isn’t a new model, though. Instead, it’s been reworked and restored from a 70th-anniversary edition Works V8, with the 2.2-litre diesel engine swapped for a 5.0-litre petrol, along with numerous other mechanical alterations.

The Selfridges off-roader started life nearly five months ago as a 2016 model – all Works V8 Defenders are crafted from existing vehicles. It was craned into the iconic Oxford Street store’s first floor as a kit – not an easy job with the new room 11 metres above street level – with a team of three technicians and five workers from Jaguar Land Rover Classic constructing the one-off Works V8 in front of shoppers in just over four days.

Rather than opting for an ultra-modern construction, though, the Selfridges Defender – which people can sit in – is decidedly old-school.

It’s a long-wheelbase model but features a soft top in trademark Selfridges yellow. The paintwork is dark Bronze Green – a classic Land Rover shade – and the load bed is decked out in wood. Inside, retro seats with custom stitching have been fitted, and there’s bespoke Selfridges badging.

Jaguar Land Rover Classic director Tim Hannig said: “Everything on this car, from the custom cross-stitched leather to the unique Selfridges hood and Works V8 conversion, has been created at our state-of-the-art Classic Works facility in Coventry.”

He added: “This may be the most quickly assembled one-off Defender in the world, but it will be on display at Selfridges in London long enough for customers to enjoy.”
