Tata's JLR June sales down despite bright UK

Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover retail sales fell 9.6% year on year in June 2019 to 47,060 vehicles.

UK sales did rise by 4.6% but volume was down in other regions including North America (-9.0%), Europe (-11.7%), China (-12.3%) and in 'overseas markets' (-18.6%), reflecting, the automaker said, "generally weaker industry conditions".

Though China sales remained down year on year in June, sales were up 23.1% compared with May.

UK sales set a June record despite the market being down 4.9%.

Retail sales of the I-Pace EV and recently redesigned Range Rover Evoque grew but other models were hit by the weaker general market conditions.

Discovery Sport sales were as expected given the launch of a refreshed model.

Jaguar retail sales in June fell 8.5% to 14,933 units while Land Rover volume was off 10.1% 32,127 vehicles compared to June 2018.

Chief commercial officer Felix Brautigam said: "While challenging conditions continue to impact other regions, we were pleased to see sales return to growth in the UK, where we are outperforming the market.

"For Jaguar, initial customer response to the XE is encouraging following the debut of new enhanced exterior design, luxurious interior and advanced technology.

"The new Evoque continues to strengthen its global sales performance following its recent debut."

He noted production of PHEV Range Rover models "has now ramped up" while mild-hybrid versions were also announced recently.

Jaguar Land Rover total retail sales for fiscal Q1 2019/20 were down 11.6% to 128,615 units.
